Conservation & Stabilization

Chimney Yard – Pacific Palisades, CA

Getty Conservation Institute visits House Museum's intermediary storage location, the Chimney Yard in Pacific Palisades, California. Getty staff included Susan Macdonald, Head of Buildings and Sites, Elena Macchioni, Project Specialist, and Benjamin Marcus, Project Specialist. The site visit resulted in a comprehensive conservation assemessment and action plan to support the sustainability of the salvaged Palisades Fire chimneys.

First Priority

Two chimneys exhibit urgent structural concerns:

• Neutra chimney: the section in the lower yard exhibit sagging, leading to structural cracks

• Higgins chimney: partial collapse above the floor slab

• Immediate stabilization is needed using shoring, bracing, or wrapping also considering current seismic risk

Second Priority

• Cover exposed chimney sections and repair covers on pallets

• Verify and update name tags specifically on the pallets

• Check numbering of pieces is still legible (where accessible)

• Consider limited grout stabilization to address detachments of bricks (evident in the Neutra chimney)

Contribute to Project Chimney: Conservation & Stabilization today with a tax-deductible donation.

Work must commence mid-April 2026.
